Erysipelas

It is also called erysipelas. Erysipel is a localized skin infection often on the lower leg.
Erysipelas manifests itself as hyperthermia, fever, extensive redness and pressure-painful swelling of the skin.
It is triggered by bacteria that penetrate through the small skin lesions.

The favoring factors for erysipelas are as follows:

  • Varicose veins
  • Heart failure
  • renal insufficiency
  • Lymphedema
  • Circulatory disorder

Duplex sonography is important in the diagnosis of erysipelas to differentiate between:

  • Venous thrombosis
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Eczema
